What is Opera

"What Is Opera?" gives students an introduction to the basic characteristics of opera. Students will discuss their preconceptions of opera, if any, listen and identify characteristics of a song (tempo, timbre, dynamic) and learn about performance practice, language, and historic aspects of opera. Best suited for children in grades K - 3. 

 

Do You Hear What I Hear? 

In this lesson, students will learn about who creates the music and words for an opera, analyze an opera song, and rhythmically and melodically compose a song with poetry. Contains versions appropriate for both younger and older groups. Best suited for children in grades K-3. 

 

Many Faces of Opera

“Many Faces of Opera” discusses how opera singers use their emotions and facial expressions to tell a story on stage. Students will be able to move and pantomime to their interpretation of a music clip, perform a scarf routine, and practice matching visual art to music. Best suited for children in grades K-3. 

 

Performing in an Opera

In this lesson, students will listen to music from the opera “Hansel and Gretel.” They will discern tempo, dynamics and timbre. Students will also create and sing their own opera using some basic elements of music (timbre, articulation, mood, tempo, dynamics). Contains versions appropriate for both younger and older groups. Best suited for children in grades K-3. 

 

Re-imagined Hansel and Gretel

One twenty-minute video that introduces the opera “Hansel and Gretel” by Engelbert Humperdinck with narration, pantomime, and music. Includes popular arias and duets such as “Come and Dance With Me,” “Where Am I,” and “Evening Prayer.” Sung in English.
